9 This is a trustworthy saying, and everyone should accept it.
10 This is why we work hard and continue to struggle①, for our hope is in the living God, who is the Savior of all people and particularly of all believers. / ①Some manuscripts read continue to suffer
11 Teach these things and insist that everyone learn them.
12 Don’t let anyone think less of you because you are young. Be an example to all believers in what you say, in the way you live, in your love, your faith, and your purity.
13 Until I get there, focus on reading the Scriptures to the church, encouraging the believers, and teaching them.
14 Do not neglect the spiritual gift you received through the prophecy spoken over you when the elders of the church laid their hands on you.
15 Give your complete attention to these matters. Throw yourself into your tasks so that everyone will see your progress.
16 Keep a close watch on how you live and on your teaching. Stay true to what is right for the sake of your own salvation and the salvation of those who hear you.

Bread from Heaven

The whole congregation of the Israelites complained against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness. The Israelites said to them, “If only we had died by the hand of the Lord in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the fleshpots and ate our fill of bread; for you have brought us out into this wilderness to kill this whole assembly with hunger.” Then the Lord said to Moses, “I am going to rain bread from heaven for you, and each day the people shall go out and gather enough for that day. In that way I will test them, whether they will follow my instruction or not. (New Revised Standard Version)

The sermon for this Sunday worship is about the story of manna. The Israelites who crossed the Red Sea entered the wilderness following the direction of God. God commanded Moses to let the Israelites know they should obey God. In the wilderness, the Israelites soon began to complain. Whenever they lacked food and water, they forgot about God and complained that they should have stayed in Egypt. Moses believed that God saved the Israelites from the Egyptian slavery and trusted God’s promise for Israel. God heard the complaints and offered them food. At night God gave quail for meat, and manna for grain in the morning. The Israelites were able to live in the wilderness for 40 years with God’s provision. God had always been with Israel and fulfilled their needs. In the New Testament, Jesus told us that He is the bread of life. Through the story of the Bible, God supplied bread for the flesh and spirit. We pray that our children become children of faith who trust God, follow Jesus Christ, and seek God’s help for their spirits and bodies.
