그녀를 가만 내버려 두어라

요한복음 12:1-11

1 유월절 육 일 전에 예수님께서는 나사로가 살고 있는 베다니로 가셨습니다. 나사로는 예수님께서 죽은 자 가운데서 살리셨던 그 사람입니다. 2 그 집 사람들은 예수님께 저녁 식사를 대접하였습니다. 마르다는 음식을 접대하는 일을 맡았고, 나사로는 예수님과 함께 식사하는 사람들 속에 있었습니다. 3 마리아가 매우 비싼 나드 향유 약 300그램을 가져와서 예수님의 발에 붓고, 자기의 머리카락으로 그 발을 닦았습니다. 그러자 그 향기가 온 집안에 가득하였습니다. 4 예수님의 제자 중 한 사람인 가룟 사람 유다가 그 곳에 있었습니다. 그는 나중에 예수님을 배반할 사람이었습니다. 유다가 말했습니다. 5 “이 향유를 팔아 그 돈을 가난한 사람들에게 나누어 주는 것이 좋지 않은가? 이것은 삼백 데나리온에 해당하는 값비싼 것인데 말이야.” 6 그러나 유다가 정말로 가난한 사람들을 생각해서 이 말을 한 것은 아니었습니다. 그는 도둑이었기 때문에 이런 말을 한 것입니다. 그는 돈주머니를 관리하는 사람이었는데, 종종 돈주머니에서 돈을 제 마음대로 꺼내 쓰곤 하였습니다. 7 예수님께서 말씀하셨습니다. “이 여자가 하는 대로 내버려 두어라. 마리아는 내 장례를 치를 날을 위해 이 향유를 준비해 둔 것이다. 8 가난한 사람들은 너희와 항상 함께 있겠지만, 나는 너희와 항상 함께 있지는 않을 것이다.” 9 유대인들이 예수님께서 베다니에 계시다는 소식을 들었습니다. 그래서 그들은 예수님만이 아니라 예수님께서 죽은 자 가운데서 살리신 나사로도 보려고, 크게 무리를 지어 그 곳으로 왔습니다. 10 그러자 대제사장들은 나사로까지 죽이려고 모의하였습니다. 11 이렇게 그들이 나사로를 죽이려고 하는 것은, 나사로 때문에 많은 유대인이 예수님께 가서 그분을 믿었기 때문입니다.

1 Six days before the Passover celebration began, Jesus arrived in Bethany, the home of Lazarus–the man he had raised from the dead. 2 A dinner was prepared in Jesus’ honor. Martha served, and Lazarus was among those who ate① with him. / ①Or who reclined 3 Then Mary took a twelve-ounce jar① of expensive perfume made from essence of nard, and she anointed Jesus’ feet with it, wiping his feet with her hair. The house was filled with the fragrance. / ①Greek took 1 litra [327 grams] 4 But Judas Iscariot, the disciple who would soon betray him, said, 5 “That perfume was worth a year’s wages①. It should have been sold and the money given to the poor.” / ①Greek worth 300 denarii. A denarius was equivalent to a laborer’s full day’s wage 6 Not that he cared for the poor–he was a thief, and since he was in charge of the disciples’ money, he often stole some for himself. 7 Jesus replied, “Leave her alone. She did this in preparation for my burial. 8 You will always have the poor among you, but you will not always have me.” 9 When all the people heard of Jesus’ arrival, they flocked to see him and also to see Lazarus, the man Jesus had raised from the dead. 10 Then the leading priests decided to kill Lazarus, too, 11 for it was because of him that many of the people had deserted them① and believed in Jesus. / ①Or had deserted their traditions; Greek reads had deserted

네가 믿으면 하나님의 영광을 볼 것이다

요한복음 11:28-44

28 마르다는 이 말을 하고는 집으로 돌아갔습니다. 마르다가 마리아를 따로 불러 내 말했습니다. “선생님이 여기 오셔서 너를 찾으신다.” 29 마리아는 이 말을 듣자마자 바로 일어나 예수님께로 갔습니다. 30 예수님께서는 마을로 들어오지 않으시고, 그 때까지 줄곧 마르다를 만났던 곳에 계셨습니다. 31 마리아와 함께 집에 있으면서 마리아를 위로하던 유대인들은 마리아가 일어나 황급히 나가는 것을 보았습니다. 그들은 마리아의 뒤를 따라 나오면서, 마리아가 통곡하러 무덤에 가는 것이라고 생각했습니다. 32 마리아는 예수님께서 계신 곳으로 갔습니다. 마리아는 예수님을 보자, 그의 발 아래 엎드려 이렇게 말했습니다. “주님, 주님께서 여기 계셨더라면, 저의 오빠가 죽지 않았을 것입니다.” 33 예수님께서 마리아와 마리아의 뒤를 따라온 유대인들이 우는 것을 보셨습니다. 예수님의 마음은 격한 감정이 들면서 몹시 아프셨습니다. 34 예수님께서 말씀하셨습니다. “나사로를 어디에 두었느냐?” 그들이 대답했습니다. “와서 보십시오, 주님.” 35 그러자 예수님께서 눈물을 흘리셨습니다. 36 그것을 보고 유대인들이 말했습니다. “예수님께서 나사로를 얼마나 사랑하였는가 보아라.” 37 그러나 그들 중에는 “앞 못 보는 사람의 눈도 뜨게 한 사람이, 나사로가 죽지 않게 할 수는 없었나?”라고 말하는 사람도 있었습니다. 38 예수님께서는 몹시 아픈 마음으로 무덤에 가셨습니다. 그 무덤은 입구를 커다란 돌로 막은 굴이었습니다. 39 예수님께서 “돌을 옮겨 놓으라”고 말씀하셨습니다. 죽은 나사로의 여동생 마르다가 예수님께 말씀드렸습니다. “주님, 오빠가 죽어 무덤에 있은 지, 이미 사 일이나 되어 냄새가 심하게 납니다.” 40 예수님께서 마르다에게 말씀하셨습니다. “네가 믿으면 하나님의 영광을 볼 것이라고 내가 너에게 말하지 않았느냐?” 41 그래서 사람들이 입구에서 돌을 옮겨 놓았습니다. 그 때, 예수님께서는 고개를 들어 하늘을 보시며 말씀하셨습니다. “아버지, 지금까지 제 말을 들어 주셔서 감사합니다. 42 아버지께서는 언제나 제 말을 들으시는 줄을 제가 압니다. 그러나 저는 주위에 있는 이 사람들을 위하여, 그들이 아버지께서 저를 보내셨음을 믿게 하기 위하여 이 말을 한 것입니다.” 43 예수님께서는 이 말씀을 하신 후, 큰 소리로 말씀하셨습니다. “나사로야, 나오너라!” 44 죽은 사람이 밖으로 나왔습니다. 그의 손과 발은 천으로 감겨져 있었으며, 얼굴도 천으로 둘러싸여 있었습니다. 예수님께서는 사람들에게 “천을 풀어 주어 다니게 하여라” 하고 말씀하셨습니다.

28 Then she returned to Mary. She called Mary aside from the mourners and told her, “The Teacher is here and wants to see you.” 29 So Mary immediately went to him. 30 Jesus had stayed outside the village, at the place where Martha met him. 31 When the people who were at the house consoling Mary saw her leave so hastily, they assumed she was going to Lazarus’s grave to weep. So they followed her there. 32 When Mary arrived and saw Jesus, she fell at his feet and said, “Lord, if only you had been here, my brother would not have died.” 33 When Jesus saw her weeping and saw the other people wailing with her, a deep anger welled up within him①, and he was deeply troubled. / ①Or he was angry in his spirit 34 “Where have you put him?” he asked them. They told him, “Lord, come and see.” 35 Then Jesus wept. 36 The people who were standing nearby said, “See how much he loved him!” 37 But some said, “This man healed a blind man. Couldn’t he have kept Lazarus from dying?” 38 Jesus was still angry as he arrived at the tomb, a cave with a stone rolled across its entrance. 39 “Roll the stone aside,” Jesus told them. But Martha, the dead man’s sister, protested, “Lord, he has been dead for four days. The smell will be terrible.” 40 Jesus responded, “Didn’t I tell you that you would see God’s glory if you believe?” 41 So they rolled the stone aside. Then Jesus looked up to heaven and said, “Father, thank you for hearing me. 42 You always hear me, but I said it out loud for the sake of all these people standing here, so that they will believe you sent me.” 43 Then Jesus shouted, “Lazarus, come out!” 44 And the dead man came out, his hands and feet bound in graveclothes, his face wrapped in a headcloth. Jesus told them, “Unwrap him and let him go!”

부활이요 생명이신 예수 그리스도

요한복음 11:1-27

1 나사로라고 하는 사람이 병이 들었습니다. 나사로는 마리아와 마리아의 언니 마르다와 함께 베다니라는 마을 사람이었습니다. 2 마리아는 주님께 향유를 붓고 자기의 머리카락으로 주님의 발을 씻어 주었던 바로 그 여인입니다. 마리아의 오빠 나사로가 병이 든 것입니다. 3 나사로의 여동생 마리아와 마르다는 예수님께 사람을 보내 “주님, 주님께서 사랑하시는 이가 병이 들었습니다”라고 전했습니다. 4 예수님께서 이 말을 듣고 말씀하셨습니다. “이 병은 죽게 될 병이 아니라 하나님의 영광을 위한 것이다. 이 병으로 말미암아 하나님의 아들이 영광을 얻을 것이다.” 5 예수님께서는 마르다와 마리아, 그리고 오빠 나사로를 사랑하셨습니다. 6 하지만 예수님께서는 나사로가 병들었다는 말을 듣고도, 지금 계신 곳에서 이틀을 더 지내셨습니다. 7 이틀 후 예수님께서는 제자들에게 “다시 유대 땅으로 가자”고 말씀하셨습니다. 8 제자들이 예수님께 말했습니다. “하지만 선생님, 방금 전에 유대인들이 주님을 돌로 쳐죽이려고 하였는데, 다시 그 곳으로 가려고 하십니까?” 9 예수님께서 대답하셨습니다. “하루 중 낮이 열 두 시간이나 되지 않느냐? 사람이 낮에 걸어다니면, 그는 이 세상의 빛을 보기 때문에 넘어지지 않는다. 10 그러나 밤에 걸어다니면 그 사람 속에 빛이 없으므로 넘어진다.” 11 예수님께서 이 말씀을 하신 후에 이렇게 덧붙이셨습니다. “우리 친구 나사로가 깊이 잠들었으니, 그를 깨우러 가야겠다.” 12 그러자 제자들이 말했습니다. “주님, 나사로가 잠들었다면 낫게 될 것입니다.” 13 예수님께서는 나사로가 죽은 것에 대해 말씀하셨지만, 예수님의 제자들은 나사로가 정말로 잠을 자고 있는 것으로 생각했습니다. 14 그 때, 예수님께서 분명히 말씀하셨습니다. “나사로가 죽었다. 15 하지만 너희를 위해서는 내가 거기에 있지 않았던 것이 기쁘다. 이것은 너희들이 믿을 수 있도록 하기 위함이다. 그러나 이제 나사로에게 가자.” 16 그 때, 디두모라는 별명을 가진 도마가 다른 제자들에게 “우리도 주님과 함께 죽으러 가자”고 말했습니다. 17 예수님께서 나사로의 집에 도착했습니다. 그 때 나사로는 이미 죽어 무덤 속에 있은 지 사 일이나 되었습니다. 18 베다니는 예루살렘에서 약 3킬로미터 조금 못 되는 곳에 있었습니다. 19 많은 유대인이 오빠를 잃은 마르다와 마리아를 위로하러 두 자매에게 왔습니다. 20 마르다는 예수님께서 오신다는 소식을 듣고 예수님을 마중 나갔고, 마리아는 집에 남아 있었습니다. 21 마르다가 예수님께 말했습니다. “주님, 주님께서 여기 계셨더라면 제 오빠가 죽지 않았을 것입니다. 22 그러나 지금이라도 주님께서 하나님께 구하시는 것은 무엇이든지 하나님께서 주시리라는 것을 알고 있습니다.” 23 예수님께서 말씀하셨습니다. “네 오빠가 다시 살아날 것이다.” 24 마르다가 대답했습니다. “마지막 날에 있을 부활 때, 제 오빠가 다시 살아난다는 것을 제가 압니다.” 25 예수님께서 마르다에게 말씀하셨습니다. “나는 부활이요 생명이다. 나를 믿는 사람은 설령 죽는다 해도 살 것이며, 26 살아서 나를 믿는 사람은 그 누가 되었든지 결코 죽지 않을 것이다. 네가 이것을 믿느냐?” 27 마르다가 대답했습니다. “네, 주님. 저는 주님께서 그리스도이시며, 세상에 오시기로 한 하나님의 아들이심을 믿습니다.”

1 A man named Lazarus was sick. He lived in Bethany with his sisters, Mary and Martha.
2 This is the Mary who later poured the expensive perfume on the Lord’s feet and wiped them with her hair. Her brother, Lazarus, was sick. 3 So the two sisters sent a message to Jesus telling him, “Lord, your dear friend is very sick.” 4 But when Jesus heard about it he said, “Lazarus’s sickness will not end in death. No, it happened for the glory of God so that the Son of God will receive glory from this.” 5 So although Jesus loved Martha, Mary, and Lazarus, 6 he stayed where he was for the next two days. 7 Finally, he said to his disciples, “Let’s go back to Judea.” 8 But his disciples objected. “Rabbi,” they said, “only a few days ago the people in Judea were trying to stone you. Are you going there again?” 9 Jesus replied, “There are twelve hours of daylight every day. During the day people can walk safely. They can see because they have the light of this world. 10 But at night there is danger of stumbling because they have no light.” 11 Then he said, “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but now I will go and wake him up.” 12 The disciples said, “Lord, if he is sleeping, he will soon get better!” 13 They thought Jesus meant Lazarus was simply sleeping, but Jesus meant Lazarus had died. 14 So he told them plainly, “Lazarus is dead. 15 And for your sakes, I’m glad I wasn’t there, for now you will really believe. Come, let’s go see him.” 16 Thomas, nicknamed the Twin, said to his fellow disciples, “Let’s go, too-and die with Jesus.” 17 When Jesus arrived at Bethany, he was told that Lazarus had already been in his grave for four days. 18 Bethany was only a few miles① down the road from Jerusalem, / ①Greek was about 15 stadia [about 2.8 kilometers] 19 and many of the people had come to console Martha and Mary in their loss. 20 When Martha got word that Jesus was coming, she went to meet him. But Mary stayed in the house. 21 Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if only you had been here, my brother would not have died. 22 But even now I know that God will give you whatever you ask.” 23 Jesus told her, “Your brother will rise again.” 24 “Yes,” Martha said, “he will rise when everyone else rises, at the last day.” 25 Jesus told her, “I am the resurrection and the life①. Anyone who believes in me will live, even after dying. / ①Some manuscripts do not include and the life 26 Everyone who lives in me and believes in me will never ever die. Do you believe this, Martha?” 27 “Yes, Lord,” she told him. “I have always believed you are the Messiah, the Son of God, the one who has come into the world from God.”

내가 하는 일이 나를 증명한다

요한복음 10:19-42

19 예수님의 이 말씀 때문에 유대인들 사이에 또다시 편이 갈리게 되었습니다. 20 이들 중 많은 사람이 “그가 귀신이 들렸다”고 하거나 “그가 미쳤다. 너희가 왜 그 사람의 말을 듣느냐?”라고 말하기 시작했습니다. 21 그러나 “이것은 귀신들린 사람의 말이 아니다. 귀신이 앞을 보지 못하는 사람의 눈을 뜨게 할 수 있느냐?”라고 말하는 사람들도 있었습니다. 22 예루살렘에 수전절이 다가왔습니다. 수전절은 겨울에 지키는 유대 명절입니다. 23 예수님께서는 솔로몬 행각이 있는 성전 뜰의 주변을 거닐고 계셨습니다. 24 유대인들이 예수님 주위에 모여들어 이렇게 물었습니다. “언제까지 우리를 애태우게 할 작정입니까? 만일 당신이 그리스도라면 우리에게 터놓고 그렇다고 말해 주십시오.” 25 예수님께서 그 사람들에게 대답하셨습니다. “내가 전에 말하였으나, 너희는 믿지 않았다. 내가 내 아버지의 이름으로 행하는 일들이 나를 증언한다. 26 그러나 너희는 나의 양이 아니므로 믿지 않는다. 27 내 양은 나의 음성을 듣고, 나도 내 양을 안다. 내 양은 나를 따른다. 28 나는 그들에게 영생을 준다. 그들은 영원히 멸망하지 않을 것이며, 아무도 그들을 내 손에서 빼앗을 수 없을 것이다. 29 양들을 내게 주신 나의 아버지는 모든 것보다 더 큰 분이시다. 그러므로 아무도 내 아버지의 손에서 내 양들을 빼앗을 수 없다. 30 아버지와 나는 하나다.” 31 유대인들이 다시금 돌을 집어 예수님께 던지려고 하였습니다. 32 그러나 예수님께서는 그들에게 이렇게 말씀하셨습니다. “나는 너희에게 아버지에게서 온 선한 일을 많이 보여 주었다. 너희는 도대체 이 중에서 어떤 일 때문에 나에게 돌을 던지려 하느냐?” 33 유대인들이 대답했습니다. “우리는 당신이 행한 선한 일 때문에 당신에게 돌을 던지려는 것이 아니라 하나님을 모독한 말 때문에 그러는 것이오. 당신은 사람에 지나지 않는데도 자신을 하나님이라고 주장하고 있소!” 34 예수님께서 대답하셨습니다. “‘내가 선언하는데, 너희는 다 신이다’라는 말이 너희 율법에 쓰여 있지 않느냐? 35 하나님께서 하나님 자신의 말씀을 받은 사람들을 신이라고 불렀으니 성경은 파기될 수 없다. 36 하나님께서 구별하여 세상에 보낸 사람에 대해서는 너희가 뭐라고 말하겠느냐? 내가 ‘나는 하나님의 아들이다’라고 말했다고 해서 너희가 어찌 나에게 하나님을 모독한다고 말을 하느냐? 37 만일 내가 내 아버지의 일을 하지 않는다면, 그 때에는 나를 믿지 마라. 38 하지만 만일 내가 내 아버지의 일을 한다면, 나는 믿지 않는다 하더라도, 내가 하는 일은 믿어라. 그러면 너희는 아버지께서 내 안에, 그리고 내가 아버지 안에 있다는 사실을 알고, 그것을 깨닫게 될 것이다.” 39 유대인들이 다시 예수님을 잡아 가려고 했지만, 예수님께서는 그들의 손에서 빠져 나가셨습니다. 40 예수님께서는 다시 요단 강 동쪽, 전에 요한이 세례를 주던 곳으로 가셔서 거기 머물러 계셨습니다. 41 많은 사람이 예수님께 왔습니다. 그들이 “세례자 요한은 그 어떤 표적도 행하지 않았으나, 요한이 이분에 대해 이야기한 것은 다 사실이었다”고 말했습니다. 42 그 곳에서 많은 사람이 예수님을 믿었습니다.

19 When he said these things, the people were again divided in their opinions about him. 20 Some said, “He’s demon possessed and out of his mind. Why listen to a man like that?” 21 Others said, “This doesn’t sound like a man possessed by a demon! Can a demon open the eyes of the blind?” 22 It was now winter, and Jesus was in Jerusalem at the time of Hanukkah, the Festival of Dedication. 23 He was in the Temple, walking through the section known as Solomon’s Colonnade. 24 The people surrounded him and asked, “How long are you going to keep us in suspense? If you are the Messiah, tell us plainly.” 25 Jesus replied, “I have already told you, and you don’t believe me. The proof is the work I do in my Father’s name. 26 But you don’t believe me because you are not my sheep. 27 My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. 28 I give them eternal life, and they will never perish. No one can snatch them away from me, 29 for my Father has given them to me, and he is more powerful than anyone else. No one can snatch them from the Father’s hand. 30 The Father and I are one.” 31 Once again the people picked up stones to kill him. 32 Jesus said, “At my Father’s direction I have done many good works. For which one are you going to stone me?” 33 They replied, “We’re stoning you not for any good work, but for blasphemy! You, a mere man, claim to be God.” 34 Jesus replied, “It is written in your own Scriptures① that God said to certain leaders of the people, `I say, you are gods!’① / ①Ps 82.6 35 And you know that the Scriptures cannot be altered. So if those people who received God’s message were called `gods,’ 36 why do you call it blasphemy when I say, `I am the Son of God’? After all, the Father set me apart and sent me into the world. 37 Don’t believe me unless I carry out my Father’s work. 38 But if I do his work, believe in the evidence of the miraculous works I have done, even if you don’t believe me. Then you will know and understand that the Father is in me, and I am in the Father.” 39 Once again they tried to arrest him, but he got away and left them. 40 He went beyond the Jordan River near the place where John was first baptizing and stayed there awhile. 41 And many followed him. “John didn’t perform miraculous signs,” they remarked to one another, “but everything he said about this man has come true.” 42 And many who were there believed in Jesus.

선한 목자이신 예수님

요한복음 10:1-18

1 “내가 너희에게 진리를 말한다. 양 우리에 문으로 들어가지 않고 다른 곳으로 넘어가는 사람은 도둑이며 강도다. 2 문으로 들어가는 사람이 양의 목자다. 3 문을 지키는 사람은 목자를 위해 문을 열어 준다. 양들은 목자의 음성을 듣고, 목자는 양들의 이름을 부르며 그들을 밖으로 인도한다. 4 목자가 자기 양을 모두 밖으로 이끌어 낸 후, 양들 앞에서 걸어가면, 양들은 목자의 음성을 알기 때문에 그의 뒤를 따른다. 5 하지만 양들은 낯선 사람을 절대로 따라가지 않는다. 양들은 낯선 사람의 음성을 알지 못하기 때문에 그 사람에게서 멀리 도망간다.” 6 예수님께서는 이 비유를 들어 사람들에게 말씀하셨습니다. 그러나 사람들은 그분이 자기들에게 하시는 말씀이 무슨 뜻인지 깨닫지 못했습니다. 7 예수님께서 다시 말씀하셨습니다. “내가 너희에게 진리를 말한다. 나는 양들의 문이다. 8 나보다 앞에 온 사람들은 다 도둑이며, 강도들이다. 양들은 그 사람들의 말을 듣지 않는다. 9 나는 문이다. 나를 통해 들어가는 사람은 구원을 얻을 것이다. 그 사람은 들어가기도 하고 나가기도 하며, 또 좋은 목초를 발견하기도 할 것이다. 10 도둑은 훔치고, 죽이고, 파괴하기 위한 목적으로 온다. 그러나 나는 양들이 생명을 더욱 풍성히 얻게 하기 위해 왔다.” 11 “나는 선한 목자다. 선한 목자는 양을 위하여 자기 목숨을 내놓는다. 12 품삯을 받고 양을 돌보는 사람은 사실 목자가 아니며, 양도 자기 양이 아니다. 그 사람은 늑대가 오는 것을 보면, 양만 남겨 두고 멀리 도망가 버린다. 그러면 늑대는 양을 공격하여 양들을 흩트린다. 13 그 사람은 단지 품삯을 받고 양을 치는 사람이기 때문에 그 양을 돌보지 않는다.” 14 “나는 선한 목자다. 나도 내 양을 알고, 내 양도 나를 알아본다. 15 아버지께서 나를 아시듯이 나도 아버지를 안다. 그리고 나는 양을 위하여 목숨을 내놓는다. 16 내게는 이 우리 안에 있지 않은 다른 양들도 있다. 나는 그 양들도 인도해야 한다. 그 양들도 내 음성을 들을 것이다. 그래서 한 목자 아래서 한 무리가 될 것이다. 17 아버지께서 나를 사랑하시는 것은 내가 나의 목숨을 스스로 버리기 때문이다. 나는 목숨을 다시 얻기 위하여 목숨을 버린다. 18 아무도 내게서 목숨을 빼앗을 사람이 없고, 다만 내 스스로 생명을 내놓는 것이다. 나는 목숨을 내놓을 권세도 있고, 그것을 다시 찾을 권세도 있다. 나는 이 계명을 내 아버지에게서 받았다.”

1 “I tell you the truth, anyone who sneaks over the wall of a sheepfold, rather than going through the gate, must surely be a thief and a robber! 2 But the one who enters through the gate is the shepherd of the sheep. 3 The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep recognize his voice and come to him. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. 4 After he has gathered his own flock, he walks ahead of them, and they follow him because they know his voice. 5 They won’t follow a stranger; they will run from him because they don’t know his voice.” 6 Those who heard Jesus use this illustration didn’t understand what he meant, 7 so he explained it to them： “I tell you the truth, I am the gate for the sheep. 8 All who came before me were thieves and robbers. But the true sheep did not listen to them. 9 Yes, I am the gate. Those who come in through me will be saved. They will come and go freely and will find good pastures. 10 The thief’s purpose is to steal and kill and destroy. My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life. 11 “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd sacrifices his life for the sheep. 12 A hired hand will run when he sees a wolf coming. He will abandon the sheep because they don’t belong to him and he isn’t their shepherd. And so the wolf attacks them and scatters the flock. 13 The hired hand runs away because he’s working only for the money and doesn’t really care about the sheep. 14 “I am the good shepherd; I know my own sheep, and they know me, 15 just as my Father knows me and I know the Father. So I sacrifice my life for the sheep. 16 I have other sheep, too, that are not in this sheepfold. I must bring them also. They will listen to my voice, and there will be one flock with one shepherd. 17 “The Father loves me because I sacrifice my life so I may take it back again. 18 No one can take my life from me. I sacrifice it voluntarily. For I have the authority to lay it down when I want to and also to take it up again. For this is what my Father has commanded.”
